Lions Finish Regular Season With 3-0 Loss At Covenant College

Vincent Thomas (pictured), Justin Whitaker and Manny Silvano led the Lions in scoring attempts with four combined shots in tonight's 3-0 loss at Covenant College.
Box Score Lookout Mountain, GA -- In the regular season finale, the Piedmont Lions men's soccer team was unsucessful in an attempt to usurp the Scots of Covenant College, losing 3-0. The Lions gave up a lone first half goal and two late second half goals in the contest.

Piedmont's Kenneth Hearn had his work cut out for him in the first half, facing five shots in the first fifteen minutes of play. The Lions not being one to back down from a challenge answered with a header shot by senior Justin Whitaker in the 20th minute to keep the Scots on their toes.

Covenant would not let up the attack though in the first half, taking shots every chance they could. Hearn stopped all he could but luck ran out as Covenant earned and scored a penalty kick in the 34th minute to raise the difficulty for the Lions.

In the 42nd minute junior forward Vincent Thomas got a shot off on goal but it was scooped up by the Scot's keeper. At halftime, the Lions were outshot 2-16 and Covenant had a slight lead in corners.

The Lions came out ready for more pressure by the Scots in the second half. Hearn stepped up and made three difficult saves in fifteen minutes to motivate the Lions.

Freshmen Jose Manny Silvano took initiative and got two shots in within the next ten minutes; one just over the crossbar and the other saved by the Scots keeper.

77 minutes in, Covenant earned a foul in Lion's defensive third. The ball was crossed into the Lions box and finished by Covenant's leading scorer to make the score 2-0, advantage Covenant.

Piedmont worked hard for the final 13 minutes of play, but Covenant found an opportunity for one more goal on their senior night. The Scots headed a final goal in from a long throw-in with less than a minute to go to seal the deal.

After 90 minutes, the score froze at 3-0 Covenant over Piedmont. The Scots outshot the Lions 32-2 and had 10 corners to the Lions 2. Freshman goalkeeper had a season high and career-tying 12 saves in the match. Hearn gave up just goals in the match as Lions senior midfielder Justin Whitaker stepped between the posts for the final minutes of the match, earning a single save while allowing the final goal.

The Lions, now 6-11 overall and 3-6-1 in the USA South Conference at the conclusion of regular season, are seeded 8th in the USA South Athletic Conference Championship Men's Soccer Tournament. Quarterfinal play begins this Saturday as the #8 Lions will travel to #1 Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. The Lions lost a close match 1-0 to the Monarchs earlier this season at home and hope for revenge on Saturday. The kickoff time for the quarterfinal matchup is still to be determined.
