Box Score 2 Rome, GA – The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches earlier this afternoon in non-conference action falling to Berry College 3-0 and Milsaps College 3-1. The pair of SAA members handed Piedmont just their second and third losses in 18 non-conference matches during the 2013 season though all three have come within the team's last four matches.
In the opening match for the Lady Lions, Piedmont took a 1-0 lead with their 25-22 win in the first set but fell in three after that 25-16, 25-21, and 26-24. The Majors tallied 57 kills to just 41 for the Lady Lions who fell to Milsaps by the 3-1 final score.
Newcomer
Jackie Campbell had a solid day offensively at the net with her 14 kills against Milsaps to lead the team in that category. Senior
Danielle Maffett was tops in the hitting percentage column with her .455 mark on six kills in 11 attempts.
Simpsonville native
Katie Faith was the team's leader in digs with her 25 followed by
Heather LaPrade's dozen. Splitting the setting was LaPrade with her 15 to lead the team in that category while
Xandy Green contributed 14 to the effort.
In PC's second match of the day, Berry would be too much for the Lady Lions to handle taking the match from the visitors in straight sets 3-0. The Vikings took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-14 before getting a bit more trouble in the third set in a 25-21 score.
The Lady Lions struggled to get going offensively tallying only three kills as a team in the first set before managing 16 more in the next two sets combined. Berry tallied 15 kills in the first two sets each before collecting 19 in the deciding third.
Piedmont's
Mallory Leary led the team against the Vikings with her eight kills on 18 attempts including a trio of errors. Leary's .278 hitting percentage also led the team in that category as many of the Lady Lions couldn't get their offensive numbers typical of the season against a tough Berry squad that picked up their 20th win of 2013 with the straight sets victory.
Two Lady Lions reached double digit dig totals in
Kaitlin Norman and
Jessica Hollis with Norman getting a dozen and Hollis picking up ten. Sophomore
Xandy Green was the team's assist leader vs. the Vikings with her 10 helpers as the only Lady Lion in double-figures in that category.
With the pair of losses, Piedmont falls to 23-8 overall having dropped five of their last seven contests. The Lady Lions have little time to recover as they will be on their way to Montgomery, Alabama for a road test at Huntingdon College in conference play tomorrow afternoon. First serve in the October 27th match is set for 2:00 pm.
