Lions Lose Nailbiter to Averett 3-1 Giving Up Two in Last Five Minutes to The Cougars

Codi Schutz and the Lions played their best second half of soccer yet this season, but it wasn't enough as Averett came out on top, 3-1.
Box Score Danville, VA -- After a tied first half, and evening up the score 1-1 through the second, the Lions couldn't finish their chances while Averett finished two in the last five minutes to settle the score 3-1. Junior Vincent Thomas scored the tying goal to lead the Lions on their second half charge.

Averett led the first half in possession and shots, coming out strong on their senior day. The Cougars didn't give the Lions many chances to take the ball past midfield, but senior defender Stephen Sherfy kept the back line steadfast. The Cougars outshot the Lions 11-2 in the first half.

Two minutes into the second half, the Lions gave a Cougar midfielder too much room and he shot a long ball from thirty-five yards out. The ball found the upper corner of the Lions goal to give Averett a one goal lead.

While the Cougars were confident after a few more shots and corners, they weren't ready for a Piedmont counterattack in the 58th minute. A defelected ball gave the Lions a quick throw in the attacking half. Outside midfielder Waldyr Pierre-Louis found Vincent Thomas' foot on the run. Thomas deftly beat a defender and rocketed a shot past the Cougars goalkeeper to rally the Lions for a comeback.

The next 25 minutes of soccer was the most exciting to watch for Lions fans as they gathered chance after chance in the Averett defensive third. Up top, senior Cameron Parsons and Thomas pressured the Cougars defense and found a few shots but nothing to change the score.

In the 85th minute, the Cougars 14-4 shot count and 8-0 corner count finally caught up to the Lions. An Averett forward chipped a ball back post the goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn wasn't ready for to get the Cougars' gamewinner.

Two minutes later, after countering on a Thomas blocked shot, the Cougars found their third and final goal after beating Hearn on a left-side breakaway to seal the game.

The Lions are now 3-5 in conference after the long weekend of travel. They head to Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for the final regular season and conference match. Stay tuned to PiedmontLions.com for updates on the Lions next week!
