Box Score Greensboro, NC - The Piedmont College women's soccer team won its second overtime decision in a row by the same score line knocking off Greensboro College 1-0 on the road. In a physical battle of two organized and well coached teams, the Lady Lions came out on top outshooting the Pride 19-6 along the way to earn their 8th USA South victory in 2013.
In the first half, Piedmont's attack controlled the pace of the match while the back four of the green and gold held strong despite some solid chances by the Pride of Greensboro. Lady Lion keeper
Marjorie Hammond came up with a key save moving to her left on a shot from distance to keep the score level at 0-0 while the front runners of Piedmont forced Greensboro keeper Jessica Thatcher to make a pair of first-half saves as well.
Though creating chances, the Lady Lions found it tough to find the frame throughout the match though several services from wide areas would test the Greensboro defense. Despite 10 combined shots in the first half, the scoreboard read 0's across at halftime in a tight contest that would be key to the USA South standings as Piedmont entered the day in a tie for second in the league while GC was in a three-way mix for 4th.
The Lady Lions would continue to put pressure on the Greensboro defense in the second half with eight shots to the Pride's three, but again the girls from Demorest would be unable to finish off their chances in the final third. Piedmont would need a big save from its goalkeeper in the second half as well to stay in it with sophomore
Michaela Gardner stepping in this time to stick a big save on a wide service in the waning minutes of regulation to keep the score tied at 0-0. Gardner and Hammond combined for the shutout performance on the day in goal with two saves between them.
After the final whistle blew and no time remained in regulation, the two would need overtime to settle the score. For the Lady Lions who had been involved in four overtime matches prior to today going 3-0-1 in those decisions, the extra time was familiar territory and looked that way from the start as PC outshot the home team 4-0 in the first OT.
After winning a corner with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period, junior
Shayna Rogers stepped up to serve Piedmont's final chance of the afternoon whipping in a ball to the top of the goal box that was emphatically headed back to the near post by forward
Megan Hatfield for the game winner. For the freshman, the goal is her seventh of the season and came with 49 seconds remaining in the overtime period.
Winning their fourth overtime decision in 2013, Piedmont continues to show a balanced attack going forward as each of those four game-winning goals in overtime have come from a different player on the roster. Hatfield becomes the fourth different Lady Lion to score in overtime this season joining teammates
Laura Goodwin,
Savannah Castles, and, most recently,
Taylor Hockley who scored the game winner over Huntingdon College in a 1-0 decision on Senior Day at Walker Athletic Complex this past Saturday.
The win moves Piedmont to 13-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference putting the Lady Lions in three-way tie for first place in the USA South. Today's victory also sets up a big showdown tomorrow for the squad who pay a visit fellow first place team Averett University who is also 8-1-1 in USA South play. Kickoff in the road match for PC is set for 1:00 pm.
