Box Score Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont Lions stepped up on senior day and led the Lions to a 1-0 victory over conference opponent Huntingdon College. The Lions outshot the Hawks in both halves with a final shot count of 9-6 after 90 minutes.
Although Piedmont beat the Hawks 2-0 a year ago to the day, the Lions were ready for a tough match. Huntingdon made it a reality early with an early shot on goal in the second minute and a corner kick right after. The Lions followed up with several shots of their own by leading goal-scorer
Vincent Thomas and senior
Justin Whitaker to test the opponent's defense.
Hard work paid off for the Lions in the 34th minute. Freshman midfielder
Jose Manny Silvano recovered a ball from the Huntingdon defense and quickly sent a ball into space across the field. It looked like the ball had gone to waste but junior forward
Vincent Thomas appeared out of nowhere on a sprint and beat the lone defender to the ball. He rocketed a shot on frame that the keeper couldn't handle and gave the Lions the lead and eventual game-winner.
In the remainder of the half, goalkeeper
Kenneth Hearn stopped the remainder of Huntingdon's five first half shots.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw the Hawks test senior
Stephen Sherfy's defense with a number of corners and a shot just over the crossbar. The Lions remained stalwart though, not letting a single shot on frame the remainder of the game.
The Lions earned a few more chances on goal in the final third of the game but no more goals came.
Vincent Thomas and senior
Justin Whitaker led the Lions shooting with four and three shots respectively. Seniors
Brendan Lister and
Cameron Parsons contributed to the Lions success with hard work in the midfield on senior day.
The Lions are now 6-8 overall and 3-3 in USA South competiton. Their next competition will be a USA South conference trip north as they travel next weekend to Greensboro College for a 4:00 p.m. Friday match and 3:00 p.m. Saturday match at Averett University. Stay tuned to
