Scots Snap Lady Lions' 12 Game Unbeaten Streak With 2-1 Result

Piedmont's Leilani Healy scored in the 72nd minute tonight of the Lady Lions' 2-1 loss to Maryville as PC fell for the first time in almost seven weeks of play in the 2013 season.
Box Score Maryville, TN - The Piedmont College women's soccer team could not get the result they were looking for traveling to Maryville College for a conference showdown of the top two teams in the women's soccer standings of the USA South Athletic Conference.  PC fell 2-1 at the home of the Scots to register their first defeat in conference play during the 2013 season, a loss that also snapped an unbeaten streak that the Lady Lions had stretched to 12.

In the first half, Piedmont controlled much of the action getting chances early in behind the Scots' back four with freshman Savannah Castles breaking free in the opening minutes.  However, her effort was turned away by Maryville goalkeeper Mandy Marshall just over four minutes into the game.  Marshall would have to do the same in the 12th minute when freshman Megan Hatfield had a chance to give PC the early lead.

The pair of early chances would be coupled with a trio of first half corners that all came in the first 45 minutes for Piedmont.  After that spell, the squads would continue to battle throughout the first half with Maryville getting two late chances on goal that Piedmont keeper Marjorie Hammond had to collect as the scoreline would stay 0-0 through half.

After the intermission, Maryville began to get their best chances with one effort paying off in the 62nd minute when reigning USA South Player of the Year Ashley Howarth broke away from the PC back four and buried a right-footed shot to the back post.  That score gave Maryville the first goal of the contest though they would collect a second in the 70th minute to go up 2-0 looking to seal the victory with 20 to play.

Just two minutes later, Piedmont would stay in the game when sophomore Leilani Healy scored the goal of the year so far for the Lady Lions when she crushed a ball from 30 out over the head of a retreating Marshall.  With the Piedmont goal, the Lady Lions trailed now just 2-1 with almost 20 to play.

PC would create several late chances to give themselves a chance to win it, but after a Castles effort went wide with six minutes to go, the Lady Lions would be unable to get the equalizer falling 2-1 to Maryville.  For Piedmont, the loss is the first in 47 days for the girls from Demorest who were receiving votes in the D3soccer.com national poll.  Getting the loss in goal was Marjorie Hammond who picked up five saves as her record on the year to 9-2-1.

The Lady Lions fall to 11-2-1 on the year with the loss and are 6-1-1 in conference play.  Piedmont will return to action this coming Saturday when the squad plays host to Huntingdon College for an afternoon contest that is also senior day for both PC soccer programs. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.
