Volleyball Swings Split in Danville at USA South Tri-Match to Secure 9th Straight 20-Win Season

Piedmont's Mallory Leary (#1) had 14 kills in the Lady Lions' 3-1 win over Ferrum College earlier this afternoon, a victory that secured PC's 9th straight season with at least 20 wins.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Danville, VA – The Piedmont College volleyball team opened today with a loss to Averett University in USA South action but came back to grab a win over Ferrum College later in the day and salvage a split in the Saturday tri-match.  Hosted by Averett, PC first fell in straight sets to the host Cougars 3-0 before taking a 3-1 win over the Panthers of Ferrum on a neutral floor to give Piedmont its 9th consecutive 20-win season.

In the Lady Lions' first contest of the afternoon, Piedmont was defeated by North Division leader Averett who took the decision to move to 10-1 in conference play.  The host Cougars won the match in straight sets 25-17, 27-25, and 25-19 holding Piedmont to single digit kills in two of the three sets.

Piedmont's offensive leaders in the match were senior Kaitlin Norman and newcomer Jackie Campbell who each tallied a half dozen kills in the loss.  Norman got her totals on 18 total attempts while Campbell picked up her numbers on 24 total attempts.  Norman added a trio of block assists to the effort as well while both tallied four digs.

Lady Lion Jennifer Opper led the team in hitting percentage with her .375 mark on three kills in eight attempts as she continues to be one of Piedmont's most efficient attackers.  Senior Ashley Fannon added five kills to the cause along with a half dozen digs.  Katie Faith was the defensive leader with her ten digs while Katheryn Knarr added eight and led the team in assists with 13.

The Cougars tallied 49 kills as a team compared to 26 for Piedmont who struggled offensively hitting just .158 as a team.  The loss is the second for PC in their last six matches after the Lady Lions had previously won 13 in a row.

In PC's second match of the USA South action in Danville, the Lady Lions would split the first two sets with Ferrum College winning the first 25-11 before dropping the second 25-21.  Tied at one set apiece, Piedmont would go on to two dominating performances in the third and fourth sets winning 25-13 and 25-11 respectively.

The win against the Panthers of Ferrum secures the program's 9th straight season with at least 20 wins as the Lady Lions have done so in each of Head Coach Sid Feldman's five years at the helm.  This is the earliest point in a season that total has come though as PC needed just 23 games in 2013 to crest the 20-win barrier.

Sophomore Mallory Leary led four Lady Lions in double figures in the kill department with 14 to her name on 28 attempts representing a .357 hitting percentage.  Opper once again demonstrated her efficiency with a .529 mark getting 10 kills on 17 attempts.  Also reaching double figures was Norman with her 11 and Campbell with her 10.

Norman registered a double-double in the win with 13 digs to add to her 11 kills while Katie Faith was once again the category leader with her 16 digs.  Sophomore setter Xandy Green tallied 20 set assists to lead the way in that column while youngster Heather LaPrade added 12 more.

Piedmont held Ferrum to single-digit kill totals in each of the four sets in the win while never tallying less than double-digits themselves.  The Lady Lions hit .455 as a team while holding the Panthers to a paltry .097 mark.

With the split, Piedmont moves to 20-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play to hold tight to the second spot in the South Division of the USA South.  8-2 in their last ten matches, the Lady Lions will face another South Division opponent this coming Tuesday when they travel to LaGrange College for a key USA South battle.  First serve is set for 6:00 pm.
