Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team got five goals in the first half of today's 9-0 win over USA South member Mary Baldwin College earlier today to move to a perfect 6-0-1 in the league. The Lady Lions got scores from five different players with two scoring multiple goals as senior
Laura Goodwin and freshman
Nicole Entinger each accomplished the feat.
Producing 30 shots or more for the second time in their last three games, the Lady Lions tallied 34 total chances with 18 of those finding the frame forcing Fighting Squirrels goalkeeper Kayla Childers or a Mary Baldwin defender to deflect the effort away from their net. Despite being potent offensively, PC also was tight defensively not allowing the visitors to get a single shot off in the 90 minute contest, something that has not occurred since Piedmont held Wesleyan College to no shots in a 10-0 win on September 29th, 2011.
Using 27 players in the match, PC got on the board in the first four minutes of the game with
Nicole Entinger scoring the first of four goals on a finish from a
Nikki Means pass. The two would link up again just over ten minutes later in almost the same fashion as Entinger would make it 2-0 PC after 14 minutes of play.
The scoring continued in the 18th minute when forward
Laura Goodwin scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon finishing on a well-time through ball from junior
Kelley Miller. Goodwin's second would come in the 23rd minute when she finished a
Shayna Rogers pass to the back post putting PC up four goals. For Goodwin, the pair of scores put her season total to 13 tying her for the lead in conference with Morgan Funck of Ferrum.
After a
Savannah Castles goal in the 26th minute ended the scoring for Piedmont in the first half at 5-0, the Lady Lion offensive attack quieted down for the remainder of the first period. The halftime break only spurred on more scoring though as sophomore
Whitney Lambert picked off a Fighting Squirrels pass in the 60th minute and delivered a well-placed shot that hit the far post and went in for the 6th goal of the day. Lambert's goal was the only unassisted goal on the day as the Lady Lions did well to create chances with little space to play in behind the Mary Baldwin back line.
A first-time strike from
Katie Zoller in the 69th minute made the advantage 7-0 home team as she finished a good layoff from Entinger up top. Entinger would then go on to score a pair of goals within a minute of each other in the 89th and 90th minutes as she tallied four goals and an assist in the 9-0 win playing only 47 minutes.
For Entinger, the start was the second of her young Lady Lion career though her performance on the afternoon was a career one indeed. Her nine total points is the third-highest single game total since the 2005 season and her four goals is tied with three others for the second best single game total in the same time period.
Sophomore
Michaela Gardner got the win between the pipes for PC needing not to make a single save in the dominant defensive performance led by the Piedmont back four. For Gardner, the shutout is the first complete game clean sheet of her career and the 12th appearance that she has not allowed a score in her two seasons on campus.
The victory puts Piedmont at 11-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 as the Lady Lions extend their unbeaten streak to a dozen games now. The win also sets up a clash of the titans next Wednesday night in Maryville, Tennessee as the Lady Lions will visit Maryville College who joins Piedmont in the top two of the conference table. The October 16th USA South contest is set for a 5:00 pm kickoff.
