Maryville, TN - Piedmont took a 4-0 Great South Athletic Conference record on the road to its arch-rivals Maryville College, but came away 5-1 in conference after a slim 4-3 win in game one and a 6-4 loss in the second game.  The Lady Lions were backed in the opener by freshman Kristin Hamby's solo homerun in the second inning.  A seven-hit, four-run effort was just enough to squeeze past the Lady Scots.  However, game two saw the host team drill three round-trippers, including a multi-homer game by one individual.

Hamby's homer in the first game broke a scoreless tie in the second before junior Megan McClain's two-run triple in the following frame pushed the lead to 3-0.  Sophomore Brittney Head, who went the complete game for the win, was solid throughout save a rough fourth inning in which she gave two runs back.  A pair of Maryville doubles and a single got it on the board and closed the gap to 3-2.  The game remained tight throughout, until the top of the seventh when freshman Symone Ball singled and stole second with one out.  Junior Taylor Morgan singled to right center moments later with two away to give the women a much-needed insurance run.

Maryville attempted a dramatic comeback but fell just short despite pushing across another run, making the final 4-3.  Head's first opposing hitter in the final frame smashed a homerun before the pitcher retired the next three hitters to end the game.  McClain ended the first game with two hits and two RBI, while Morgan also tallied a pair of hits.  Hamby's homerun was the first of her collegiate career.  In the circle, Head's complete game win consisted of three strikeouts to just one walk and eight hits.

The second game saw the visiting Lady Lions score first on a wild pitch, but the lead wouldn't hold up for very long.  The Lady Scots dropped a three-spot on the scoreboard in the home half of the first.  It was Maryville's Leah Kelly who produced the big blow, blasting a three-run homerun to put Maryville ahead for good.  One inning later, Kelly mirrored her first at-bat, this time a two-run shot to go up 5-1.  Freshman Haley Peeples finally got the Lady Lions back in the scoring column with an RBI infield single in the fifth, giving Piedmont new hope.  Almost on cue, the home team turned the comeback attempt away with another homerun in the ensuing at-bat, making the 6-2 lead out of Piedmont's grasp.

The Lady Lions made one last effort with a two-run sixth inning, capped by junior Megan Kesler's two-run, two-out double to finish the scoring at 6-4.  The women went down in order in the final inning.  Sophomore Amanda Posey took the loss in the second game despite recording just two outs.  Head came in for the final five-plus innings, striking out six, while giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks.  The Lady Lions were held to just five hits in the night-cap, all by separate hitters.

McClain ended with three hits on the night, while Peeples, Morgan and Hamby all had two hits each.  The double header split moves the Lady Lions to 12-8 on the season and 5-1 in GSAC competition.  The women will return to the diamond in action Thursday at Salem with a conference double header beginning at 2:00 pm.
