Lady Lions Season Ended As Huntingdon And Maryville Win Low-Scoring Games

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Emily Cheek and the Lady Lions dropped a pair of close games in the second day of the GSAC Tournament, ending their season with a 22-15 overall record. In a day where runs and hits were a premium, the senior catcher drove in her final collegiate run in the first game.
Maryville, GA - The Lady Lions' season was brought to a sudden halt with two losses in one day in the Great South Athletic Conference championship tournament, first a 3-1 loss to top-seeded Huntingdon College, followed by a nail-biting 2-1 defeat against conference tournament host Maryville College.  Piedmont was held to just six total hits on the day despite the strong pitching of Brittney Head.

Top-seeded Huntingdon scored a pair of runs in the second and one more in the third, and that was all it needed as the Lady Lions scratched across just one run in the third inning. Senior Emily Cheek's RBI single accounted for the only run for the women.  The sophomore Head went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two hitters.  Her one mistake pitch was a two-run homer given up to the opposing pitcher, who had never hit a homerun in her career until that moment, breaking a scoreless tie in the second and putting the Lady Hawks up for good.

Piedmont turned to Head again in the elimination game.  With their backs against the wall, the offense couldn't put more than one tally on the board against the stingy Maryville College pitching.  Head was very effective, going seven complete innings, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits and no walks.  Two errors by the Piedmont defense were too costly to overcome.  However, the Lady Lions led 1-0 as freshman Symone Ball's run-scoring single in the third held up until a Maryville two-run fifth frame.

Piedmont's exit from the tournament ended its season with a 22-15 overall record.
