Rome, GA - The Lady Lions showed an ability to hold off a threatening rally and also to form a comeback rally of their own, defeating Berry College 7-6 in the opener before a dramatic come-from-behind 6-3 in a double header sweep on the road.  Piedmont scored a run in the first and two in the second in game one to move ahead, never looking back en route to its 10th win of the season.  Game two featured the Lady Lions nearly being no-hit until a two out double in the sixth that led to the lone run.  A five-run seventh completed the comeback as the offense staged a dramatic rally.

In the opener of the twin bill, the visitors wasted no time moving in front of Berry College.  After a leadoff single by freshman #HaleyPeeples#, senior Emily Cheek singled her in a couple of batters later, giving her a team-high 12 RBI on the season.  Piedmont kept it going in the second when junior Megan Kesler earned a free pass to begin the frame.  Freshman Whitney Wolfe doubled on the next play, putting two in scoring position with non away.  Fellow classmate Symone Ball singled to left to put the women up 2-0.  Junior Taylor Morgan's groundout to third brought in Wolfe moments later as Piedmont went up three.

Junior Jamie Dennis led off the sixth with a two-bagger, and after advancing to third on a groundout, Wolfe lifted a sac fly to center to bring in the fourth run for the Lady Lions.  Sophomore pitcher Brittney Head maintained a shutout until the sixth, when she ran into trouble she couldn't quite get out of unscathed.  Three straight singles had the Lady Vikings in business with loaded bases.  However, Head and the Lady Lions buckled down and got back-to-back foul popouts to catcher Cheek.  Nevertheless, Berry College finally came up with the huge hit it needed when the seventh-place hitter cleared the bags with a three-run double.  The 4-0 shutout suddenly became a 4-3 ballgame before Head struck out the next hitter to end the rally.

Senior Megan McClain, hitless until the seventh, backed Head and the team, getting one of the runs back on a one-out RBI double to left, scoring Morgan to extend the lead to 5-3.  After freshman Kristin Hamby was hit by a pitch, Dennis singled up the middle to plate two more, as Piedmont matched Berry's three-run sixth to advance the lead to 7-3.  As it turned out, the runs were much needed.  The Lady Vikings, down to their final out, punched a three-run homer to make it 7-6.  The following hitter kept the hope alive with a base hit, putting the tying run aboard.  Head fanned the final hitter to end the game and earn her eighth win of the year.

Dennis ended with three hits and two RBI, while Hamby# tallied two hits.  The women posted 12 total base hits in the first game.  Unlike the high output for the Lady Lions seen in the opening game, game two saw the women on the opposite end of the spectrum initially.  Berry College held the visitors to no hits until Morgan doubled with two outs in the sixth.  After moving up a base on a wild pitch, Cheek singled in her 13th run of the season to narrow the gap to 3-1.

Staging the Lady Lions' comeback win, they put the first two hitters on base in the final inning, on a walk and hit by pitch, as both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Pinch hitter, sophomore Courtney Clark, walked to fill the bases with just one out.  Sophomore Lauren Head singled for just the third PC hit, scoring two and tying the game at three apiece.  Two hitters later, it was Morgan again coming through with the clutch hit, singling up the middle to bring two more home and give the Lady Lions a 5-3 lead.  The five-run seventh was capped by McClain's RBI single with two outs.

Morgan had a pair of hits in the second game, driving in two runs, just as LAUREN HEAD did.  Sophomore Amanda Posey picked up the win with six innings of work, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two.  BRITTNEY HEAD pitched the seventh to earn the save, the first of the season and second of her career.  The twin bill sweep leaves the Lady Lions 11-7 overall and five wins in the last six games.  The women return to action at Maryville College Tuesday at noon and 2:00 pm.
