Demorest, GA - It took the Lady Lions 10 minutes into the game to grab a lead, but once they did, they quickly pulled away from Salem in a 69-41 win Saturday afternoon. The shorthanded Spirits played with squad of only five women, but came out strong holding a lead until the 10:20 mark when senior
Amber Satterfield drilled a 3-pointer to put the Lady Lions up 18-17 after trailing by as many as seven early in the half.
By halftime Piedmont had a comfortable 35-23 lead following a 12-0 run before halftime. Senior
Sada Wheeler had a monster opening half, going for 17 points and nine rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time. She recorded the first seven Piedmont points and nine of the team's first 11. The home team came out shooting cold in the first half, making just three of 15 deep shots.
Junior
Keiondria Thompson got the women going with a clutch tri-fecta pulling Piedmont within four of the lead with 11:13 to go in the first, beginning an 8-0 run that was capped moments later by Satterfield's lead-changing triple. Sophomore
Danielle Hendrick also hit a clutch long range shot to begin the 12-0 run.
The Lady Lions picked up the tempo coming out of the second half, going on a 16-0 run after Salem drained a 3-pointer to begin the last stanza. Satterfield connected on her second to begin the run, then hit another from downtown moments later. The 16 unanswered points nearly doubled Piedmont's lead over the Spirits, 51-26, midway through the half. Salem finally got back on track with a 10-2 run consisting of a pair of 3-pointers, pulling within seven. Freshman
Charlotte Lewallen closed things out in style for the Lady Lions, converting a 3-point play and collecting another short range bucket thereafter. Wheeler led the women with 17 points and 19 rebounds, as 11 Lady Lions recorded points in the blowout win. Satterfield ended with nine points on three tri-fectas, while Jones tallied eight and Thompson and Hendrick had seven apiece.
Piedmont moves to 18-3 overall and improved to 10-2 in Great South Athletic Conference action. The ladies next play Wednesday night at home against LaGrange College, with tip-off set for 6:00 pm.
