Dylan Delaney came up with two dramatic 3-pointers within seconds of each other near the midway part of the second half to give Piedmont a slim lead, but Maryville held on for the eventual 81-71 win. The freshman's second triple on a fast break broke a 49-49 tie with 12:45 to go gave the Lions a three-point lead before the rivals took over and held on for the hard-fought win.
Maryville went into the half up 40-29, leading by as many as 17 in the latter part of the opening half. It took the Lions six minutes before putting points on the board while watching the Scots jump out to a 10-0 lead before freshman
Safari Smith collected a bucket for PC. Smith made another layup to make it an eight-point game. A 12-2 Maryville run put them up 17, a well-needed padding as the Lions were able to pull within 10, 40-30, going into the locker room.
The deficit remained 10 points at the 18:36 mark in the second stanza before an 18-5 run for Piedmont, highlighted by 3-pointers from senior
Josh Haymore and junior
Michael Ross, making it a five-point game, and Delaney's tri-fectas to complete the comeback for the visitors. The last share of the lead Piedmont had was with 12:20 left in the game, but Maryville slowly began pulling away with six straight points.
The edge was at six, then a 6-2 mini-run for Maryville gave it a 10-point lead with six minutes to go in the game. Freshman
Richarson Myrthil scored five straight points for Piedmont to pull within five with 3:28 on the clock, but Maryville hit nine shots from the charity stripe the rest of the way for the win. Sophomore
Kyle Lundberg nailed a trey to make it a 10-point game, closing out the game's scoring.
