Men's Soccer Battles #20 CNU To The Wire

Rojello Navarette tallied a goal and an assist in the Lions' 3-2 loss to #20 CNU.
Box Score DEMOREST, Georgia -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team battled nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University to the wire falling 3-2 to the nation's #20 ranked team in USA South Athletic Conference action.  CNU jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead but the Lions fought back just missing the chance to equalize and force extra time.

CNU's Andrew Bonorden tallied an unassisted goal at the 10:50 mark to open the scoring.  Sean Moriarty used an assist from Jalon Brown to make it 2-0 ten minutes later. 

Rojello Navarette would cut the Captain lead in half with an goal on an assist from SIDNEY SMITH at the 28:19.  CNU would stretch the lead to 3-1 at the 38:02 on an unassisted goal by Alex Makmbi and that score would carry into intermission.

SIDNEY SMITH would use a helper from Navarette at the 65:48 mark to cut the lead to 3-2 but the Lions could not find the equalizer in the final 25:00 despite outshooting the Captains 7-6 in the second half.

CNU (13-2-2, 6-1-1 USA South) held a 23-11 advantage in shots and took all seven of the game's corner kicks.

Piedmont's KENNETH HEARN tallied five saves in goal which was equal to his counterpart Nolan Mann. 

The loss drops Piedmont to 5-9-2, 0-5-2 USA South as the Lions will wrap up the regular-season on Wednesday, October 24th with a night contest against LaGrange College.  A win in the finale would secure the Lions a berth in the upcoming USA South Conference Championship with quarterfinal games to be contested at the site of the higher seeds on Saturday, October 27 with the four winners advancing to Martinsville, VA for the championship.
