Box Score

Demorest, GA - After a two-plus weeks' hiatus, the No. 20 Lady Lions started slow but finished strong in a 78-62 win over Great South Athletic Conference foes Agnes Scott, moving to 11-0 and 3-0 in GSAC action.  Piedmont failed to connect on a triple in the entire first half and struggled at the charity stripe, yet shot 60-percent before the break.  The five-point lead they took into the locker room held up, as the offense came alive in the second stanza en route to the 16-point win.

Five Lady Lions reached double figures, led by senior Shanice Wheeler with 14 points in the win. Junior Alyssa Jones and sophomore Lauren Hamel added 13 points apiece, while junior Keiondria Thompson and senior Sada Wheeler finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Sada contributed well while on the court despite an illness.  She was only able to play 16 minutes, but hauled in a few boards and added a block, assist and steal.

SADA WHEELER notched the first six points for the Lady Lions, but the visiting Scotties found themselves out in front on two separate occasions in the first half.  Piedmont looked to be taking off, up seven with 7:35 to go before intermission, but a 7-0 Agnes Scott run gave the Scotties a one-point cushion with five minutes remaining.

Jones responded with a pair of driving layups to reclaim the lead for good for Piedmont.  Thompson chipped in with four points closing out the first half.  It was the other Wheeler who starred in the second half.  SHANICE WHEELER put together six consecutive points to open the closing frame as part of a 9-2 Piedmont run, stretching the lead to a game-high of 12 points at the time.

It took 27 minutes into the game before the Lady Lions connected from long range, courtesy of Hamel.  It was the beginning of a 10-2 run by the women, who went up by 20 two different times.  Amber Satterfield and Jones hit back-to-back treys midway through the half.  Agnes Scott continued to be persistent, unwilling to go quietly.  It used mini-runs of 5-0 twice and a 4-0 run as well to chip away at the deficit.  However, Jones' 3-pointer with 5:35 left gave Piedmont an 18-point padding.

The Scotties made one last attempt to come back, striking with a rainbow triple with two minutes on the clock to narrow the gap to 13, but the Lady Lions converted on a few free throws to preserve the 16-point win.  Piedmont travels to Spelman College Saturday at 2:00 pm in its attempt to win a 12th straight game and start out 4-0 in GSAC play.  Agnes Scott falls to 2-7 and 1-1 in the conference.
