Sewanee, TN -- After a wild finish that saw saw four goals in the final five minutes of regulation, the Piedmont College men's soccer team fell for the fifth time in 2011 dropping a 4-2 decision to the Tigers of Sewanee-University of the South. Trailing 3-0 with just minutes remaining, the Lions scored a pair of goals to make the hometown fans sweat before allowing Sewanee to tally its own late score for the final two goal margin.
With Sewanee controlling the action throughout the first half, the Tigers produced 11 shots to the four for Piedmont in the first 45 minutes of play. Just nine seconds before the halftime whistle blew, it was the home team who would find the net as Matt Lightfoot tallied the score on an assist from Devon Ball putting the Tigers up 1-0 at the break.
Coming back from the intermission, Sewanee continued to pace the play with a score in the 68th minute as Watson Hartsoe this time slid a shot on goal past Piedmont keeper
Brian Gaid to double up the advantage at 2-0 Tigers. After adding a third score in the 86th minute with Ball finding the back of the net this time, the match appeared to be all but over until the cardiac cats of Piedmont attempted to reach in the bag of tricks for more magic in 2011.
Piedmont's comeback effort would start just 12 seconds after Sewanee's third score with
Vincent Thomas tallying his first collegiate goal on an unassisted strike which made the scoreboard read 3-1 in favor of the Tigers. However, a
Sidney Smith goal in the 88th minute off an assist from
Nick Weatherby put everyone on the edge of their seat as the Lions trailed by just one score after putting back-to-back goals on the board in less than two full minutes of play.
Despite pulling to within one, Piedmont's hopes would again be dashed by a Sewanee score as Lightfoot's second goal of the match came less than one minute after the Lions' second goal as team putting the match out of reach at 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Tigers held the advantage in total shots with 25 to Piedmont's 13 while the two were even in corner kick chances at five each. Senior
Brian Gaid put in his second straight performance of double digit saves having to make ten on the afternoon against the Tigers while
Sidney Smith led the way offensively creating eight total shots with three of those finding the frame.
The loss drops PC to 2-5 overall. The Lions hope to snap their current losing streak of three games with a win on Tuesday, September 27th when they take on Great South Athletic Conference foe LaGrange College in their first league test of the season. Kickoff in the road contest is set for 7:00 pm.
