Raleigh, NC -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak stretch to eight games in 2011 as the Lady Lions rolled Peace College 11-1 on the road earlier this afternoon. Piedmont outshot the Pacers 25 to 3 while holding the home team without a shot in the second half as a 4-1 halftime lead exploded to the 11-1 final margin care of seven second half goals.
To kick off the scoring, sophomore
Laura Goodwin netted one of the fastest goals in program history scoring just 40 seconds in chipping a through ball from freshman
Emily Shattuck over the Peace keeper for the quick 1-0 lead. The Pacers then caught the Lady Lions by surprise a few minutes later with a long distance strike on goal which got past Lady Lion goalkeeper
Marjorie Hammond to equalize the score.
With the two tied at 1-1, Piedmont looked to quickly reclaim the lead with another sophomore finding the net as
Meghan Heim scored the first of her three goals on the day in the seventh minute to hand the advantage back to the visitors. A pair of breakaway finishes from newcomers
Emily Shattuck and
Nikki Means helped Piedmont extend its lead at 4-1 through the first half of play.
Following the break, the Lady Lions got a pair of goals from Heim with one coming just 25 seconds into the second half while the other occured in the 49th minute off an assist from Goodwin. The scores completed the hat-trick for Heim, the second such performance of her collegiate career with the first coming in a win over Toccoa Falls College during her freshman campaign.
With the score now 6-1, the high line being played by Peace College would prove costly as the Lady Lions capitalized with four straight breakaway goals on through balls from the midfield. Scoring that quartet which extended the lead to 10-1 was sophomore
Cydney Goodwin, freshman
Nikki Means, and junior
Macie Rooke who had two of the four goals.
A score by Mobile, AL native
Amber Hyche in the closing minutes would seal the final 11-1 score over the Pacers marking the second time in two games against Peace that the Lady Lions have reached double digit scoring totals. The offensive output is the sixth time that the Lady Lions have reached double digit scoring totals in the
Stephen Andrew era at PC.
Now 7-0-1 on the season, Piedmont will look to keep its unbeaten streak alive with a win on Friday night when the Lady Lions take on Bluefield College under the lights at the Walker Athletic Complex. Kickoff in that September 23 contest is set for 7:00 pm.
