A Haley Grimes corner kick led to what ended up as the game winning goal on the evening when Dilyn MacLean powered the ball past Oglethorpe's keeper in tonight's 6-0 shutout defeat of the Stormy Petrels.
Box Score

Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team had little trouble defeating in-state foe Oglethorpe University earlier tonight by a final score of 6-0 representing their fifth shutout victory in six games.  The Lady Lions got two first half goals before exploding offensively in the second half for four more scores to notch their sixth straight win to open the season, the best start by a Piedmont women's soccer team in the NCAA era beginning with the 2003 season.

Opening up the scoring on the evening was junior Dilyn MacLean who headed home a Haley Grimes corner with authority to put the home team up 1-0 in the 22nd minute of play.  The score would stay at one nil until Grimes would get a chance to tally a goal of her own when a Stormy Petrel foul led to a Lady Lion penalty kick.  The sophomore midfielder calmly stepped up to convert the PK just before the halftime whistle blew as PC carried a 2-0 advantage into the break.

At the half, PC was outshooting the visitors 15 to four, and though the shot count evened up in the second half, the score did not as the Lady Lions rattled off four more goals to shut the door on any OU attempt at a rally.  First up was senior midfielder Justine Clay who cracked a long range shot over the head of the Oglethorpe keeper in the 48th minute, the first of two goals for the Buford native on the night.

After an own goal in the 49th minute made the score 4-0 PC, Clay would strike once more with another long distance try this time putting a free kick in the top corner scoring her second goal of the game as she notched her second multi-goal performance in the last three games.  With 13 minutes remaining, youngster Shayna Rogers would add the exclamation mark on the win winning the ball at midfield just before lacing a 35 yard strike over the OU keeper.

The six goal victory is also the sixth on the season as the Lady Lions' 6-0 start is both the best in the Stephen Andrew era and NCAA era at PC.  Under Andrew, Piedmont has now tallied at least six goals in a game 14 different times over the last four seasons.

Piedmont will look for their seventh victory of the year when they travel into hostile territory to face a tough South Region opponent in Meredith College on Friday, September 16th.  The kickoff is set for 7:00 pm at the Raleigh, NC school.
