Macon, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team stayed alive in the 2011 Great South Athletic Conference softball championship tournament with a 19-0 victory over Wesleyan College earlier this morning in an elimination contest. The Lady Lions' victory assures the squad of another game in the championship tourney as they will now play in a 4:30 game with the chance to play a third Saturday game should they take a victory in that first afternoon contest.
In the opening game of softball Saturday at the MAC, Piedmont had little trouble knocking sixth seeded Wesleyan College out of the GSAC championships taking a 19-0 victory over the hosting Pioneers. Youngsters
Brittney Head and
Megan Studdard combined on the mound to shut down Wesleyan's offense as each struck out four while Head's one-hit two-inning performance was bested only by Studdard's hitless three-inning showing.
Piedmont rode ten first inning runs to the double digit victory batting around the order in the opening frame with shortstop
Megan McClain picking up a leadoff walk and a three-RBI triple in that first inning at the plate. McClain finished three for four in the win over the Pioneers with four RBIs and three runs scored while outfielder
Taylor Morgan also turned in a fine performance offensively going two for three with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Batting in two runs for the Lady Lions in the Saturday opener was senior
Raley White who also had a sliding catch in centerfield to preserve Studdard's hitless three innings. Freshman catcher
Lauren Head also swung well at the plate going two for three with three runs scored in her first GSAC championship tournament action.
The Lady Lions now will face the winner of the day's 3-5 match-up between Maryville College and Agnes Scott College in a 4:30 afternoon game. For complete coverage of the GSAC Softball Championship inlcuded updated brackets and schedules, fans can visit www.greatsouth.org.
