Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College tennis teams each saw 9-0 shutouts earlier today as the men's tennis team whalloped visiting Maryville College by a 9-0 score while the women fell in shutout fashion the Lady Scots. The Lions took all nine available points to sink the defending Great South Athletic Conference champion Scots while the Lady Lions dropped their fourth GSAC match of the season.
On the women's side, the highlight came from the #2 doubles spot where
Lauren Anderson and
Cydney Goodwin fought hard but came up just shy in their 8-6 loss. The two move to 2-3 overall in doubles play on the season picking up their second defeat at the #2 doubles slot in 2011.
In the men's action, it was a statement day for Head Coach
Shane Wood's Lions as the squad took down the 2010 GSAC champion in Maryville taking all nine points from the visiting Scots. After taking the three doubles points with relative ease by a combined 24-8 score, the team had to get two tight tie break points in #1 and #2 singles to assert their dominance over the tournament champs from a year ago.
Junior
Moses Das moved to 4-1 in GSAC play to stay in contention to defend his Player of the Year status earned during his sophomore season. Das' victory came 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 while
Joel Silverberg also needed a crucial win in his second set to earn a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory at #2 singles.
A slew of newcomers grabbed singles victories for the now second place Lions in
Patrick Steck,
Christopher Davidson,
Andrew Babb, and
Jay Evans. Babb and Evans took their wins by the exact same score 6-0, 6-1 while Davidson's #3 win came 6-4, 6-4. Steck grabbed his third conference singles win at 6-4, 6-1 in the #3 spot.
The Lions jump to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference needing just one more GSAC win to solidify a runner-up regular season finish. The Lady Lions fall to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in league play. The women's tennis team gets back on the courts tomorrow afternoon with a visit to Spelman College while the men's team has a week off before traveling to Maryville College on April 19 to finish out the year.
