Piedmont Tennis Splits With In-State Rival Emmanuel As Men Win Tight 5-4 Decision

The Piedmont College tennis teams could not quite get the clean sweep this afternoon as the men's team won 5-4 while the women's team dropped a 7-2 decision to visiting Emmanuel.

Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College tennis teams split a pair of matches with in-state foe Emmanuel College earier this afternoon at Burgen Tennis Courts.  The men's team took a tight 5-4 victory rallying to take four of their six singles slots for the match win while the women fell short dropping a 7-2 decision after starting out with a 3-0 deficit in doubles play.

The Lady Lions victories came in singles play as Maria Carter highlighted the list with her second collegiate win in as many singles matches.  The Duluth native took a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 singles to pick up one of PC's two points on the day moving her career singles record to 2-0.

In men's action, Piedmont began the match down 2-1 after the doubles side with Christopher Davidson and Justin Gilleland accounting for the Lions lone double win 8-5 at the #2 spot.  However, the Lions would go on to rally in singles play taking four of the final six possible points to snare a 5-4 victory. 

With the match tied at four points a piece, it was Justin Gilleland who proved to be the difference with his point at #6 singles handing PC the win.  However, the point did not come easy as the youngster had to take the second set in a tie break situation winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

The men's victory moves the Lions to 5-4 on the year while PC improves to 3-2 against teams from the state of Georgia.  The women fall to 2-4 with the loss to Emmanuel.  Both squads will be back in action together once more as they host Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College for a 1:00 afternoon match on Sunday, March 27.
