Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team fell behind early but used a four spot in the seventh to pull away from the Colonels of Centre College in a 9-2 home victory earlier this evening. The Lions picked up solid relief pitching and aggressive baserunning to overcome a first inning deficit collecting a seven run decision in front of a packed crowed at Loudermilk Field.
The Colonels looked to make it a long night for the Lions when they quickly put up a pair of first inning runs on hosting Piedmont. However, those scores would be the last of the night for Centre as Piedmont scored in five of their eight innings at bat to roll past the visitors for a second straight victory.
The Lions tallied a run each in the third, fourth, and finally fifth inning to take their first lead of the day care of a
Tate Koons sac fly that put
Ethan Miers across the plate safely. That run put PC in front for good at 3-2 after five innings of play.
Piedmont also got good production in the bottom of the seventh with a four spot that started with RBI base hits from veterans
Kyle Davis and
John Duke.
Curtis Cornett then sliced a single past an outstretched Colonel infielder to score two later in the frame to give the Lions a 7-2 lead.
The home team would get another pair of scores in the bottom of the eighth, but the story of the game had already been written by then as the Lions claimed a second straight victory with a 9-2 decision at home.
Piedmont's star of the day was a familiar face in the Lion baseball headlines for the 2011 season as junior
Kyle Davis had a career night going four for five at the plate tallying three RBIs while also stealing an incredible six bases on the evening. The everyday outfielder also tried his arm on the mound pitching the ninth inning to allow no runs and no hits while striking out a Colonel batter retiring three of the four he faced to seal the win for PC.
Hurler
Davis Partrick got the win in relief coming in to pitch three innings of scoreless baseball while also not allowing a hit on the night. The Gainesville, GA native struck out four of the nine hitters he faced retiring all but two batters in order to collect his first win of 2011.
Offensively, first baseman
Curtis Cornett went two for four stroking a double while collecting a pair of RBIs to go with an assist in the field. Fellow infielder
Ethan Miers was two for four with two runs scored while centerfielder
Dave Bartek went three of four with a run scored.
Defensively, senior
John Duke tied a season high with his four assists at the second base spot. The helpers went well with his two for three day at the plate that included a RBI and two runs scored.
The victory moves the Lions to 14-9 overall and puts together a two-game winning streak heading into tomorrow night's home game with DePauw University. The Tigers will come to Loudermilk Field for the 7:00 game on March 23.
