Maryville, TN -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team fell to the top team in the Great South Athletic Conference in Maryville College on the road earlier this afternoon 72-59. Despite outrebounded the Lady Scots 37-25, it was 24 Piedmont turnovers that proved to be the visiting Lady Lions' undoing in the end as MC took the 13 point decision to stay undefeated in GSAC play.
In the first half, Piedmont went shot for shot with the conference leaders taking a three-point lead at 25-22 on a
Keiondria Thompson layup with just under five minutes to play in the opening period. However, Maryville continued to keep pace with the Lady Lions and carried a five point lead into the halftime break on a two-bucket at the buzzer.
Junior
Sada Wheeler was the team's scoring leader at the half with her 12 points but was held scoreless in the second half as Maryville shut down PC's post play to start to pull away. The host Lady Scots' lead pushed into double-digits at the 13:37 mark of the second half as the league's #1 team proved to be too much for the Lady Lions down the stretch in the 13 point decision.
Post players
Sada Wheeler and
Laura Simmons led the way in the scoring department with 12 points each shooting a combined eight of 20 from the field. Wheeler posted her tenth double-double of the season by also pulling down ten boards while Simmons was six of eight from the charity stripe.
Junior
Amber Satterfield was three of five on the day for nine points on the Lady Lion side connecting on both of her tries from three-point land. Also chipping in nine points was
Keiondria Thompson who came off the bench to shoot seven of eight from the free throw line.
Guard
Shanice Wheeler scored seven points while also pulling down four rebounds and collecting a pair of assists. Point guard
Alyssa Jones posted a team-high four assists to lead the team in that department for the seventh consecutive game.
The loss drops Piedmont to 9-3 in conference play and third place in the GSAC standings. Now at 15-8 overall, the Lady Lions will look to snap off their longest losing streak on the season at three games when they take on GSAC member Wesleyan College on Tuesday, February 15. Tip-off is set for 6:00 in the Cave.
