Lady Lions Stretch Win Streak To Five Games With Blowout Win At Wesleyan

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Alyssa Jones helped lead the Lady Lions past GSAC foes Wesleyan on the road Friday night, scoring six points and adding seven assists in the 34-point blowout win. The Lady Lions remain undefeated on the season, and now sit at 5-0 and 2-0 in the conference heading into Sunday's game against visiting Emory University.
Box Score

Macon, GA - The Piedmont Lady Lions' basketball team used a flurry of 3-pointers and took advantage of Wesleyan's six-point first-half output en route to a 34-point victory, keeping them unbeaten on the season. Wesleyan scored just six points in the opening half, and the visiting Lady Lions breezed to a 60-26 win.   Amber Satterfield was nearly unstoppable from beyond the arc, draining five treys as part of her 17 points. The women tallied 10 tri-fectas on the evening, shooting 37-percent from downtown.

Sada Wheeler continued to dominate as she has all season, scoring a game-high 18 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in the win.  The senior tallied her fourth double-double in the 2011-12 campaign, and remains one of the top rebounders in the nation.

Although the women led 30-6 at the half, their second-half effort was arguably better than the opening half.   The Lady Lions shot over 30-percent from the floor and over 26-percent from long range, but didn't let up at all after the break.   The women upped their game, making half of their 3-pointers (6-for-12) and made 40-percent of their shots.

Wheeler and Satterfield were the lone scorers in double figures, but the Lady Lions had nine players chip in offensively.  Alyssa Jones and freshman Charlotte Lewallen finished with six points apiece, which gave Lewallen her first collegiate points.  Jones was key in getting the ball distributed to her teammates, coming up with seven assists in the game.

Despite Wesleyan's low output in the opening half, the Pioneers rebounded well in the second half.  The opening stanza featured a 13-percent shooting percentage for Wesleyan as they hit just three of 23 on the floor.  However, they went 5-for-22 in the second half, and added eight free throws as well after not having a trip to the line in the entire first 20 minutes.  The Pioneers slip to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Great South Athletic Conference play.

Piedmont cleaned up on the boards, nearly doubling Wesleyan's rebounding total, 53-27, and held their GSAC foes to an 18-percent shooting total for the game.  The Lady Lions' defensive effort was highlighted by 16 steals and forcing 25 turnovers on the night.  Piedmont increases their season-opening win streak to five games, something never done before in the NCAA-era going back to 2003 for the women.

The Lady Lions are now 5-0 and 2-0 in the conference, and next play at home Sunday afternoon against in-state rival Emory University.  Tip-off is slated for 2:00 inside Cave Arena.
