Winston-Salem, NC -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team rode a pair of second half scores to a 2-0 shutout victory over Great South Athletic Conference member Salem College earlier this afternoon. The win is the sixth straight for PC which ties their longest winning streak of the season and moves their unbeaten streak in 2011 to 13 games.
The first half of today's league match between the inter-state rivals saw both teams create chances as Piedmont continued its pursuit of a GSAC regular season crown. Sophomore goalkeeper
Marjorie Hammond made several key saves in the first 45 minutes of play including a diving effort at a Salem free kick which parried the ball just wide of the frame for a Spirit corner.
The two teams would stay scoreless through the halftime break, but not for long after coming back onto the pitch for the second half as senior midfielder
Justine Clay scored another timely goal for Piedmont with her cracking drive from distance in the 46th minute which sent Salem's keeper backtracking only to watch the ball slide down the back of the net. That Lady Lion goal pushed Piedmont ahead 1-0 as the visitors got on the board first for the 12th time on the season.
PC then absorbed several attacking efforts from the home team before seeing freshman
Taylor Hockley's non-stop effort on their own offensive end produce an insurance goal in the 69th minute. With the youngster from PC doubling up the Lady Lions' margin at 2-0, Piedmont would never look back cruising to yet another shutout victory, their 10th clean sheet of the season.
With the victory, Piedmont moves to 12-0-1 and 4-0 in GSAC action. The Lady Lions return to the pitch this coming Wednesday, October 12th with a 5:30 pm contest against GSAC member Covenant College though the match will not count in the conference standings.
