Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team posted its ninth shutout victory in 12 games earlier this evening with a 4-0 defeat of visiting Agnes Scott College in Great South Athletic Conference action at the Walker Athletic Complex. Outshooting the Scotties 20 to eight on the night, the Lady Lions had the run of the play for most of the 90 minutes putting ten shots on target while also creating 11 corners to just one for the visitors.
Opening up tonight's scoring the team's leader on the season in goals as junior
Dilyn MacLean netted what ended up as the gamewinner in the 25th minute puttting away a cross from fellow forward
Laura Goodwin, the first of two helpers on the night for the sophomore. That would be the only dent in the scoreboard in the first half with Piedmont heading into the break leading 1-0 with the shot count representing a 6-3 advantage to the home team through 45 minutes of play.
However, depth off the bench for PC would prove to be the Scotties' undoing as Piedmont Head Coach
Stephen Andrew used 20 different players on the evening to wear down the Agnes Scott defense leading to a trio of second half goals which put the match out of reach. In the 55th minute,
Laura Goodwin would get a goal to go with her pair of assists tallying a score on a long driven ball in from fellow Goodwin, Cydney, whose cross fell to the foot of Laura in the box before the sophomore pounded the ball past Scotties keeper Ashley Watts.
Just over 17 minutes later, defender
Kelsey Schaffernoth proved dangerous on set pieces once again scoring on a header off a corner from
Laura Goodwin with the goal representing Schaffernoth's second such score in as many games. Junior
Haley Grimes then rounded out the scoring when she leathered a long distance strike in the 82nd minute which dipped away from Watts to drop in the lower near post corner for the final 4-0 margin on the night with Alabama native
Amber Hyche getting the assist on Grimes' exclamation point goal.
Finishing with three saves in goal was sophomore
Marjorie Hammond who posted her fourth straight clean sheet and ninth on the season as she moves her record in 2011 as the starter to 11-0-1. The back four for Piedmont also put in the work as well to help keep the shutout blocking four of Agnes Scott's chances on goal.
The Lady Lions move to 11-0-1 on the year and stay perfect at 3-0 in GSAC action. Piedmont continues its conference schedule with an anticipated road matchup at league member Salem College this Saturday, October 8th. Kickoff in Winston-Salem, NC is set for 2:00 pm.
