Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team fell for just the second time in 18 regular season games earlier this afternoon dropping a 2-0 decision to visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College. Surrendering a second half goal for the first time this season, Piedmont struggled to create much offensively as the loss secures the Lady Lions as the #2 seed in the upcoming GSAC championship tournament.
Maryville got its first goal when Alex Wingo sent a ball towards the back corner of the Piedmont goal where it fell over the head of Lady Lion goalkeeper
Marjorie Hammond. That strike came in the tenth minute of play shocking the fans at Walker Athletic Complex with the Scots taking a 1-0 lead over the home team.
The score would hold up throughout the rest of the match until Maryville added a second score in the 81st minute on a set piece as Alexis Franco tucked away the Lauren Ward service. The second half score is the first allowed by Piedmont in the 2011 campaign and marked the final margin of a 2-0 win for the Scots.
The loss puts Piedmont at 15-2-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play. With the second seed now secured for PC, the Lady Lions will face the winner of a quarterfinal set to take place early next week between third seeded Salem College and sixth seeded Huntingdon College. Piedmont's semifinal will occur on Friday, November 4th with kickoff set for 1:45 pm and will be hosted on the campus of LaGrange College, site of the 2011 GSAC soccer championships.
