Montgomery, AL -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team set a new program record earlier today with a 2-0 victory over Great South Athletic Conference member Huntingdon College on the road. The victory is the 15th of the season for PC setting a new NCAA era record for wins in a season surpassing the 14 victories of the 2009 campaign.
Piedmont battled the Lady Hawks throughout a scoreless first half to kick off the action as both teams had chances in the opening 45 to notch the game's first score. However, neither would dent the scoreboard before halftime though PC began to control the play as the intermission drew near.
With the halftime break over, Piedmont broke the scoreless tie when sophomore defender
Kristen Murri's service off a cleared corner kick found freshman defender
Kelsey Schaffernoth waiting on the back post to finish the chance putting PC up 1-0. Moments later, junior
Dilyn MacLean would add to the Lady Lions' advantage when she pounded a volley past Huntingdon keeper Jenny Burnash for Piedmont's second score of the game.
That 2-0 score would hold up as the final as PC claimed their sixth conference victory of the season including a second straight league win. Sophomore
Marjorie Hammond gets credit for the clean sheet spending all 90 minutes in goal for PC picking up her 16th victory in 18 career starts.
The Lady Lions move to 15-1-1 overall and sit three games back of tying the program's all-time record of 18 wins in a season set back in 1997. Piedmont has a week off before hosting conference rival Maryville College on Saturday, October 29th in their final regular season contest. With a possible regular season league championship on the line, kickoff is set for 4:00 pm.
