Box Score
Montgomery, AL -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team allowed a first half score but quickly rallied to knock off Great South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College 2-1 on the road in league action. The rallying victory away from home assures Piedmont of at least the number two seed in the upcoming GSAC championship tournament set for the first weekend of November.
Just three weeks after these two clubs battled to a 2-2 stalemate following a pair of overtime periods which included a dramatic saved penalty kick, Huntingdon scored first in today's showdown of conference rivals as senior Dallas Thomas slipped in behind the Piedmont back four early in the first half finishing his chance to the back post for the 1-0 home team lead.
Despite allowing the opening score, Piedmont would draw level with their league opponent later in the half when crafty veteran
Nick Weatherby made a sliding effort to knock a shot past the Hawks' keeper evening the score at 1-1. The two teams went to the halftime break still deadlocked at ones with each team creating attacking chances throughout.
In the second half, it was Piedmont's leading scorer on the season in junior
Sidney Smith who would give the Lions a lead to last when he found the back of the net to put PC up 2-1. That one goal decider would be the final margin in the afternoon contest as Piedmont assured itself of at least the number two seed in the GSAC championships.
Now 6-7-2 on the season, the Lions will be looking to pull their 2011 record level when they get back on the field this coming Thursday, October 27th hosting GSAC foe LaGrange College in a non-counter for league standings. Kickoff in the evening contest under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex is set for 7:00 pm.
