Decatur, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team overcame a halftime deficit to knock off Great South Athletic Conference member Spelman College in a league matchup earlier this afternoon on the road. The Lady Lions allowed a first half score for the second straight game, but came back with two goals over the final 27 minutes to pull of the 2-1 victory for their fifth conference win of the season.
Spelman cracked the scoreboard first with their 22nd minute tally as Brittnee Gillespie put a Kyra Lewis pass to the back post of the Piedmont goal to hand the hosting Jaguars a 1-0 lead. The home team would keep the advantage through the halftime break despite being outshot by PC six to four in the first period as the Lady Lions trailed for just the third time in 2011.
In the second half, Piedmont began to control more of the play finally breaking through when junior
Macie Rooke scored her sixth goal of the season taking a long ball from
Morgan Hall down inside the box and tucking it past Spelman keeper Jani Mikee. With the score now nodded at 1-1, Piedmont would get the eventual gamewinner from junior
Dilyn MacLean in the 71st minute when she broke free to score off a pass from teammate
Cydney Goodwin.
The MacLean goal handed Piedmont a 2-1 GSAC victory and was the seventh gamewinner for the Blue Ridge native putting her in the top five in all of NCAA Division III in that category. Sophomore
Marjorie Hammond got the win in goals for PC moving her record to 13-1-1 as a starter this season.
With the victory, the Lady Lions improve to 13-1-1 overall and 5-1 in GSAC play though their only loss comes against provisional member Covenant College and will not count towards championship seeding. PC returns to the field this Thursday, October 20th when the team hosts non-conference foe Columbia College for a 7:00 pm primetime match under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex.
