Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to the visiting Scots of Covenant College earlier this evening at the Walker Athletic Complex. The Lions outshot the Scots 19-14 but Covenant held the advantage in shots on goal putting up ten to Piedmont's six with the tenth for the visitors proving to be the game-winning golden goal in the first ovetime with just seconds remaining on the clock.
Close to 400 fans got quite a show earlier tonight as the scoring started early with Covenant tallying a goal in just the fourth minute of play as a deflected cross fell to the feet of Tyler Morrison who collected the ball and drilled it to the bottom left corner handing the Scots a 1-0 lead. The score held steady through haltime with Piedmont holding the shot advantage through the first 45 tallying eight total chances to six for CC.
Covenant started to really feel the heat in the second half dropping deep within their own half for much of the second period as Piedmont continued to create more attacking chances. On their fifth shot of the second half, PC would draw level as
Justin Whitaker absolutely leathered a long distance strike past Covenant keeper John Eger to tie the ballgame up at 1-1.
The two sides would battle through the remainder of regulation to stay even at ones though Piedmont had the better of the ball through the 90th minute. With the score still deadlocked through two 45 minute halves, the squads would be forced to head to overtime to decide a winner.
As the fans at home enjoyed some free soccer, Covenant started to find its second wind creating a few early chances in the first minutes of overtime with Piedmont's senior keeper
Brian Gaid making one of his eight saves on the night to hold the score steady at 1-1. However, with just seconds remaining on the clock in the first overtime, Covenant's Matt Hudnut would send a long drive hard through traffic at the top of the Piedmont box only to see it rattle off Gaid and in for the deciding second score.
Covenant's goal with 48 seconds left in overtime was the game's golden goal ending the match at 2-1 in favor of the visitors. Outshooting the visiting Scots on the night, PC also held the advantage in corner kicks with eight to Covenant's six.
The Lions fall to 5-6-2 overall though the match with the Great South Athletic Conference member does not count towards the league's year-end standings. Piedmont returns to the field when the team hosts in-state foe Emory University on Wednesday, October 19th with kickoff at Walker Athletic Complex set for 7:00 pm under the lights.
