Piedmont midfielder Justin Whitaker looked to have sealed a victory with his goal in the 63rd minute only to see Huntingdon post two scores in less than five minutes to force a 2-2 draw between the long-time conference opponents.

Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw earlier this afternoon with visiting Great South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College in a non-counter for league standings.  Piedmont held a 2-0 advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining but failed to close the door on the visiting Hawks allowing a pair of late goals to Huntingdon for the eventual draw following two scoreless overtime periods.

In what ended up as the Lions' third overtime contest of the season, PC would get on the board by taking advantage of a Huntingdon mistake in the back when junior Sidney Smith picked off a Hawk pass and scored on his ensuing breakaway chance for the 1-0 lead.  That score came with just 51 seconds remaining the first half while the goal was the sixth of Smith's 2011 campaign as he continues to pace the team's offensive attack.

Coming back from the halftime break, Piedmont again continued to create chances compiling ten total shots in the second half including a Justin Whitaker putback off a rebounded save to double up the Lions' advantage at 2-0.  The score seemed to be pushing final as the time ticked away in the second period until a shot from Huntingdon's Rusty Cowley in the 75th minute dipped through some traffic outside the 18 to get by Piedmont keeper Brian Gaid cutting Piedmont's lead to 2-1.

Just over four minutes later, the match took an interesting turn as a Dallas Thomas wonder strike from distance helped visiting Huntingdon draw level at 2-2 with a little less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation.  With Piedmont's two goal advantage wiped away, the two squads battled throughout the remainder of the second half having to go to overtime still searching for a winner.

In the extra periods, each team would have chances to put the game away with a golden goal as Huntingdon skied a clear cut chance in the 18-yard box while Piedmont created a pair of corner kicks that came up empty.  The Lions' best chance came with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime when a Huntingdon foul on a breakaway attempt from Sidney Smith led to a penalty kick being awarded to the home team.

However, the Lions would fail to convert the golden chance as Huntingdon keeper Jordan Osborne made an incredible diving save to parry the ball wide of the frame and keep the match tied at 2-2.  That final opportunity would be the period on a struggling afternoon for the Lions who oushot the visitors 24 to 16 while and took 11 corners to just three for HC.

Making seven saves in goal for PC was Gaid who played all 110 minutes between the posts for the Lions while Smith led the home team offensively with five total shots, two of which hit the frame.  Scoring for PC on the day was Smith and Whitaker with both goals coming unassisted on the afternoon.

The Lions move to 3-5-1 overall though the matchup between the conference foes did not count as a league contest.  Piedmont will take a few days off from competition before returning to the pitch to host local foe Toccoa Falls College on Wednesday, October 5th for a 7:00 pm evening game under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex.
