Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team claimed an eighth victory in its last nine contests earlier this evening with a 77-41 win at Great South Athletic Conference member Wesleyan College. The Lady Lions led by 18 at the half and only increased their advantage in the second half to cruise to the 36 point road victory.
After suffering their first GSAC defeat on Saturday, Piedmont came out with a defensive mindset early putting the clamps on the Pioneer offense to allow only four first half field goals to the home team. With the Lady Lions leading 11-8 at the 12:55 mark of the first half, PC got six points from senior
Laura Simmons to go on a 19-0 run blowing the game wide open.
Holding a 33-15 lead at halftime, Piedmont would begin to really work down low outscoring the hosting Pioneers 32 to 12 in the paint in the second half. Another layup from Simmons put the green and gold up by 30 points with over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Wesleyan never came within 20 of the visiting Lady Lions down the stretch as a late
Lauren Hamel basket gave Piedmont the final 36 point margin. The 77-41 victory was the sixth conference win for PC and the team's second win of 30 points or more this season.
Five Lady Lions scored in double figures on the night including junior
Shanice Wheeler who finished tied for a team-high 14 total points. Wheeler was a perfect seven for seven from the field in PC's 36 point win adding three assists and steals to the effort as well.
Also tallying 14 points was forward
Sada Wheeler who earned her third consecutive double-double to raise her season total to seven such performances. The Gainesville native pulled down 16 rebounds while going an incredible seven of nine from the field marking the seventh time she has shot over 75% from the field in 2010-11.
Junior
Amber Satterfield added 11 points to the cause hitting on four of her ten field goal attempts while collecting a game-high four steals. Tallying ten points for the road team was veteran
Laura Simmons who shot over 50% while collecting five total rebounds with all five coming on the defensive end.
Newcomer
Sydney Seitz joined teammate
Shanice Wheeler as Lady Lions who didn't miss a shot from the field going a perfect four of four for her ten points. Fellow freshman
Lauren Hamel scored seven points while grabbing three boards to add to her stat line.
The win improves PC to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in GSAC play moving the Lady Lions into a second place tie with LaGrange College in the conference standings. The squad will try to make it two in a row when they travel to Montgomery, AL on Saturday, January 29 for another GSAC challenge in Huntingdon College. Tip-off for the weekend contest is set for 3:00.
