Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team opened the newly-renovated Walker Field with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the visiting University of Dallas earlier this afternoon. After a deadlock of scoreless soccer through 82 minutes, the Lions finally broke through with a late goal to take the single score decision.
The entire match was tightly contested with almost identical shots on goal for each team through both halves of play. However, junior
Nick Weatherby would not let the home team open its new complex without a win on the board. After receiving a pass from freshman
Miles Flynn, Weatherby turned and fired a 35-yard screamer into the back of the net over the outstretched hand of the Dallas keeper.
Junior netminder
Brian Gaid earned the shutout in goal, his third of the season, moving his record to a near flawless 6-1 while between the posts for Piedmont. Weatherby helped pace the squad with his pair of shots on goal while junior
Jon Reinert also added two to the cause.
With the victory, the Lions move to 7-3 on the season. The team will look to keep its winning ways going when they face Methodist University on Sunday, September 26. Kickoff on Walker Field is set for 1:00.
