Piedmont Announces 2010 Women's Soccer Slate

Contact: Timmy McCormack, Sports Information Director

The PC women's soccer team will look to build on a successful 2009 campaign that saw the Lady Lions post a 14-4 record and a conference runner-up finish in both the regular season and conference tournament.
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team has released its 2010 match schedule complete with out-of-state contests against non-conference foes NC Wesleyan College and Methodist University, last season's USA South tournament runner-up. The Lady Lions will also host eight matches against teams from the state of Georgia as they look to improve on a 14-4 record during the 2009 campaign that included an appearance in the Great South Athletic Conference championship tournament final.

Highlighting the home schedule will be a September 10 match under the lights at Walker Field against visiting Meredith College from Raleigh, NC who took home the USA South Conference regular season title last fall. Meredith was one of only two schools who defeated the 2009 Lady Lions grabbing a September 26 match up last season. Piedmont will also return trips to Columbia College and Oglethorpe University who both dropped decisions to the Lady Lions this past fall at Walker Field. Newcomers to the women's soccer lineup include Covenant College and nearby Truett McConnell College who both hail from the state of Georgia.

In GSAC play, Piedmont will play host to conference members Huntingdon College, Salem College, Spelman College, and LaGrange College while traveling to Wesleyan College. The Lady Lions also pay an October visit to defending conference champion Maryville College who scored two goals in the last 19 minutes of the GSAC tournament final to overtake Piedmont 2-1 and thwart PC's attempt at a conference title. Wrapping up the regular season is a rematch with Agnes Scott College after the two clubs played an overtime classic last October that saw Piedmont climb out on top 2-1.

Of the 17 matches on the 2010 schedule, 14 are against NCAA Division-III South Atlantic Region opponents. The 2009 Lady Lions dropped a single home contest while posting a 7-3 mark away from campus. In addition to its ten regular season home matches, the PC women's soccer program will also play host to the Great South Athletic Conference championship tournament to be held on the weekend of November 5 and 6. Piedmont's season opener comes at home on Thursday, September 2 against Tennessee Temple University with kickoff set for 4:00.
