Newport News, VA -- The Piedmont College softball team fell in its NCAA Division III National Tournament opener to Christopher Newport University this afternoon by a 3-2 score. The Lady Lions held a two run lead in the sixth inning before allowing two unearned runs and a seventh inning walk-off single to drop their first NCAA post-season action.
Piedmont kicked off the scoring early in the contest with a run in the second inning to take a one score lead. After junior
Raley White reached on a walk, she was advanced by a #B.J. Cofer
sacrifice bunt and a single by freshman Taylor Morgan#. White then took advantage of a wild pitch by the home team to cross the plate, putting the Lady Lions up 1-0.
The score would remain unchanged until the top the sixth when the Lady Lions added to their lead as
Raley White again came through offensively this time with a RBI single to score teammate
Rebecca Renfroe putting Piedmont up 2-0.
PC's lead would quickly be challenged by the regional tournament host Captains of Christopher Newport who used a Piedmont error to grab two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, evening the score at two a piece.
After Piedmont was sat down in order in the top of the seventh, the host Captains rallied with a two-out RBI single in the home half of the final inning to take the 3-2 decision.
#B.J. Cofer# took just her fourth loss of the season on the mound for the Lady Lions though the junior pitcher did not allow an earned run on the day. Cofer also notched two strikeouts while allowing three walks in the tough luck loss.
With the defeat, the Lady Lions move to 29-11 overall. Piedmont will now face the Bobcats of Frostburg State University in an elimination game on Friday, May 14 with the first pitch set for noon.
