Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team used a dramatic comeback and offensive firepower to overcome visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Huntingdon College this afternoon at Loudermilk Field. After winning a 12-11 thriller in game one, the Lions also took the nightcap by a score of 7-2 claiming the weekend series from the visitors.
In game one, senior
Corey Lindsey crossed the plate in the bottom of the first to give PC the early advantage only to watch Huntingdon rattle off six runs of its own over the next three frames surging ahead 6-1.
Piedmont would strike back in the fourth as
Zach Kunz took advantage of a bases loaded situation with a two RBI double pulling the Lions within one.
KYLE DAVIS then notched the tally at six with a two out RBI single.
The two squads traded multiple runs over the next four innings until the Lions found themselves trailing by one run with two outs and one on in the bottom of the ninth. After a
Curtis Cornett RBI double evened the score at eleven a piece,
Kevin McConnell played the hero with a walk-off base hit to score Cornett and give the Lions the 12-11 victory.
Reliever
Caleb Cochran collected the win on the mound after coming on in the eight inning during a bases loaded jam to induce a double play holding the Lions deficit at one. With the victory, the sophomore from East Leslie, GA moves to 2-1 on the season.
Game two would be all Piedmont as the Lions would post runs in all but two frames en route to the 7-2 series-clinching win. Offensively, PC was led by centerfielder
Corey Lindsey who went 2-3 at the plate while posting a pair of RBIs and scoring two runs.
Seniors
Daniel Rivera and
Jared Vermilya contributed at the bat with going a combined 4-8 while posting an RBI each. Starter
Dusty Black got the win tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing only four hits.
With the wins, the Lions improve to 12-12 overall including a 2-1 GSAC mark taking their first conference series of the year. Piedmont will get back on the diamond on Thursday, April 1 in the first game of a home-away-home series with nearby Emory University. The first pitch is set for 7:00 at Loudermilk Field.
