Decatur, GA – The Piedmont College women's basketball team had its hopes for its third NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in the past four years dashed with a 57-56 heart-breaking loss to top-seeded Maryville College this afternoon at the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament championship game hosted by Agnes Scott College. Maryville scored the game's final six points to steal the title after PC led for the majority of the game.
Piedmont held a 56-51 lead with just 1:36 remaining after sophomore
Amber Satterfield knocked down a three-point field goal just as the 30-second shot clock was about to expire. Maryville narrowed the gap to three points with 1:25 on the clock after hitting a pair of free throws. MC senior Allison Harmon, who was named the tournament MVP, then hit a layup with 47 ticks on the clock that cut the Lady Lions' lead to one point.
Piedmont turned the ball over on its next possession and the Lady Scots took over with just 21 seconds remaining. A Maryville layup with just 15 seconds remaining sealed the rally and gave MC the lead for good. The Lady Scots posted a steal on Piedmont's ensuing possession to cap the come-from-behind win.
Maryville held a 44-41 lead with 8:47 left in the game but Piedmont's
Lindsey Wiley drained back-to-back three pointers to give the Lady Lions a 47-44 edge with 6:11 remaining. Wiley finished with 13 points, nine coming in the second half, and totaled three treys and four-of-five from the charity stripe. Junior
Laura Simmons scored all of her team-high 15 points during the opening half and helped Piedmont to a 33-29 lead at the intermission. Simmons also topped the team with seven rebounds.
Maryville shot 36.8 percent from the floor (21-of-57) while Piedmont finished at 38.9 percent (21-of-54). The Lady Scots finished with a 38-34 edge on the glass.
After dropping 11 of their first 16 games including a 1-4 start to the season, the Lady Lions rebounded as of late to finish the season strong winning 9 of their last 12 games to and cap the year with an even 14-14 overall record.
