Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team could not make it three wins in a row falling to visiting Greensboro College 80-62 in the Cave earler this afternoon. The Lady Lions posted a higher shooting percentage as a team than did their opponent, but the Pride would not let PC back in the game after storming to claim a first half lead.
The score would start off tight with both teams trading shots until Piedmont opened up a six-point lead on a
Sada Wheeler layup with 11:27 to go in the first half. However, Greensboro would answer by holding PC scoreless over the next 4:30 while tallying 15 points of their own to go up 24-15.
With the Pride in front 32-20 with 4:14 to go in the first, the Lady Lions would chip away at the visitor's lead until finally cutting it down to only six points on a
Lauren Hamel three-pointer just before the half. When play resumed in the second half, Piedmont would quickly draw within three as
Amber Satterfield hit from behind the arc.
That three-point margin would be the closest PC could claw back to in the second half as Greensboro once again found their shooting grove rattling off seven straight points to quickly push their lead back to ten at 43-33. The Pride continued to hold Piedmont at bay down the stretch maintaining a double-digit lead for the final 14:30 of the game.
Piedmont was led in the scoring department by the freshman Hamel who put up 16 points as the Winder, GA native continues to break onto the collegiate basketball scene. Through four games this season, Hamel leads all Lady Lion scorers averaging right at 12.5 points per game shooting 50% from the field.
Also making noise on the offensive end for PC was junior
Amber Satterfield who hit on five of her nine shots to tally fourteen total points. The shooter was deadly from the outside hitting on four of her six three-point attempts while teammate
Jordan Gustavel added on eight points to the cause.
Sophomore
Alyssa Jones led the way in assists as the guard collected six helpers to go along with her five rebounds.
Shanice Wheeler once again cleaned the glass grabbing eight rebounds including seven on the defensive end.
Although the Lady Lions stayed with the Pride point-for-point in the paint in the first half, it was Greensboro's bench that proved to be the deciding factor as they outscored PC's subs 15 to one in the first half. Piedmont's bench play would improve in the second half as they turned the tables scoring 17 points to the six from the Pride's sidelines, but miscues would continue for PC as Greensboro scored 15 second-half points off turnovers.
The loss drops the Lady Lions to an even 2-2 on the season. Piedmont will now move to begin conference play with a road trip to Spelman College on Wednesday, December 1 for a 6:00 game.
