Demorest, GA -- In the 2009 season and home opener this afternoon the Piedmont College women's soccer team defeated visiting Columbia College by the score of 2-1 at Walker Field. The Lady Lions trailed 1-0 with 24 minutes remaining but rallied with a pair of goals in a seven-minute span to take the victory.
The Fighting Koalas got on the board first with an unassisted goal off a direct kick from 35 yards out at the 17:00 minute mark. Despite numerous chances the Lady Lions could not find the back of the net and trailed 1-0 at intermission.
The women found the equalizer at the 66th minute as the visitors were whistled for a foul inside the box leading to a penalty kick.
Justine Clay, the reigning Great South Freshman of the Year, buried the shot into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Just seven minutes later the freshman tandem of
Brielle Cobb and
Macie Rooke connected on the eventual game winner. After Clay sent a pass from midfield towards the left corner flag Rooke sent a perfect cross past the keeper where Cobb drilled the header into the net. The Lady Lions defense, anchored by
Nicole Hood, held strong down the stretch denying the final attempts of CC.
PC (1-0) will return to the pitch on short rest tomorrow, September 6th as they play host to Florida College at Walker Field starting at 2:00.
