SEWANEE, Tenn. - Piedmont women's tennis played a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents to close out its regular season on Saturday afternoon in Sewanee, Tennessee.
First, the Lions fought hard but fell 7-0 to No. 24 Sewanee in the morning before dropping a 6-1 match to No. 51 Rhodes in the afternoon.
Match 1: No. 24 Sewanee 7, Piedmont 0
The Tigers took control of the match from the beginning, claiming the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 and a 6-2 win at No. 3.
However, even though the point was already in Sewanee's hands, the No. 2 doubles team of
Olivia Carpenter and
Hattie Sloyan fought valiantly, but fell 7-5 to give the Tigers more momentum going to singles.
Singles competition was heavily slanted toward Sewanee, with the Tigers winning all six lines in straight sets.
Match 2: No. 51 Rhodes 6, Piedmont 1
Taking on the Rhodes Lynx in a neutral site matchup on Sewanee's courts in the afternoon, the Lions were able to take a singles line, but it was not enough to earn the win.
Rhodes won all three doubles matches, with a 6-0 win and a pair of 6-3 wins.
Singles action once again saw all six lines finish in straight sets. However this time, Piedmont's
Halee Harper was on the winning side, with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles, moving her dual singles record to 7-2 on the season.
Already having been crowned regular season CCS Champions, Piedmont will be the top seed for the upcoming Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament, looking to win its third title in the last four years. The Lions will get underway on Friday, April 24 in the semifinals.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Harper cruised at No. 5 singles against Rhodes, winning 6-4, 6-1.
