Match 2 Score: Piedmont 5, Transylvania 1
Record: Piedmont, 7-2
ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont women's tennis kicked off its Orlando Spring Break Trip with loss to Cornell College in the morning, followed by a win over Transylvania in the afternoon on Sunday.
The Lions fell to a tough Rams team by a 5-2 margin, but quickly bounced back against the Pioneers, cruising to the 5-1 victory.
Match 1: Cornell College 5, Piedmont 2
Cornell College handed the Lions just their second loss of the season as the two teams met early Sunday morning at the USTA National Campus.
The match started off strong for Piedmont, as it took the doubles point by finding a pair of hard-fought wins at No. 2 and No. 3. After the Rams won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, the Lions needed both 2 and 3 for the doubles point. The group came through in the clutch, with the No. 3 team of
Sarah Sanabia and
Ella Kate Canaday winning 6-4, while
Kaleigh Stallworth and
Caroline Morrison's 6-4 win at No. 2 ensured it was 1-0 Piedmont going to singles.
Unfortunately, singles competition saw the action favor the Rams, who won the first set in 5-of-6 matches. Piedmont's
Drea Robinson was the lone exception, winning her first set to keep the Lions afloat.
After Cornell College put a point on the board quickly at No. 1, Robinson clinched her match (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6 to make it 2-1 Piedmont.
From there, however, it was all Rams, who won the remaining four matches on court in straight sets and clinching at No. 2.
Match 2: Piedmont 5, Transylvania 1
With the team's second match of the day starting soon after the first ended, the Lions were forced to quickly bounce back.
The No 2 doubles team of Morrison and Stallworth showed its dominance, racing to a 6-0 win. With Transylvania taking the win at No. 1 doubles, the No. 3 doubles match decided the point. Canaday and Sanabia were up to the task, closing out a 6-3 win to make it 1-0 Piedmont.
The Lions kept momentum on their side with a strong start to singles competition, taking 5-of-6 first sets to flip the script from match one. Piedmont's dominance at No. 6 singles continued, as
Jordan Ballard delivered a clinical 6-1, 6-0 win to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lions.
With a number of the next matches closely contested, the Lions were tested but emerged victorious with some hard-fought victories.
Hattie Sloyan won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 to put the team a point away from a match clincher. That clincher came from the freshman Canaday, who won 6-2, 7-6 (1) to give the Lions the win.
Elsewhere, fellow newcomer Stallworth won at No. 1 (7-5, 6-2).
Up next, the Lions will have a day off from competition before returning to the courts Tuesday morning to take on Minnesota-Morris at 8 a.m.
