Women's Tennis Splits Pair of Matches in Orlando Tuesday

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: Piedmont 7, Minnesota-Morris 0
Match 2 Score: Wisconsin-Superior 5, Piedmont 2

ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont women's tennis split its two matches on Tuesday in Orlando, racing past Minnesota-Morris by a 7-0 margin in the morning before falling to Wisconsin-Superior 5-2 in the evening.

The Lions are now 2-2 through four matches with two matches remaining on the trip.

Match 1: Piedmont 7, Minnesota-Morris 0

The Lions left no doubt in a shutout of the Cougars early Tuesday morning.

In an unusual twist, singles was contested first between the two teams, with the Lions taking control of all of the contested matches and winning in dominant fashion.

Piedmont took No. 6 singles by default as Minnesota-Morris had only five available players. Halee Harper was first to clinch, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lions. Sophomore Emily Gonzalez picked up her first win of the trip, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.

Needing just one more match to earn the clinch, Brooklyn Bolch won the race, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 to seal the victory. With the match in hand, Olivia Carpenter also cruised, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Minutes later, Drea Robinson closed out singles competition with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Doubles saw only two contested matches as the Lions won by default at No. 3. However, the Cougars fought back to win at No. 2. The Lions responded and closed out the match with a 6-3 doubles win from the No. 1 team of Harper and Annalia Small to complete the shutout.

Match 2: Wisconsin-Superior 5, Piedmont 2

The Tuesday finale saw the Lions fall to a tough Wisconsin-Superior team in a hard-fought match.

The Yellow Jackets were able to eke out the doubles point before winning 4-of-6 singles lines to take the win.

UW-Superior rolled to a win at No. 1 doubles, but No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were closely contested. Piedmont's No. 3 doubles team of Ella Kate Canaday and Sarah Sanabia outlasted their opponents with a 7-5 win. However, the Yellow Jackets won by the same scoreline at No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Four of the six singles matches went to third-set match tiebreaks. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets won two of those four, plus a pair of straight set wins to grab the win.

Singles action from the Piedmont side was highlighted by a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 win from Caroline Morrison at No. 2, and a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 comeback win for Jordan Ballard at No. 6.

Hattie Sloyan and Canaday each battled in hard-fought three-setters.

Up next, the Lions will conclude their tennis in Orlando with a pair of matches on Thursday, taking on Bryn Mawr in the morning, followed by a matchup with Anderson (Ind.) in the afternoon.
