Women's Tennis Falls to Bryn Mawr in 4-3 Heartbreaker to Conclude Orlando Trip

NEED TO KNOW:

Records: Piedmont, 8-4; Bryn Mawr, 6-3

ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont women's tennis wrapped up its Orlando Spring Break trip with 4-3 loss to Bryn Mawr Thursday morning before its scheduled match with Anderson University (Ind.) was unable to be completed due to rain.

In a remarkably even match in which singles was contested before doubles, the outcome of the match was decided by the doubles point at the end.

The teams played singles dead even, with each side taking three matches.

Three of the six matches were forced to third-set match tiebreaks and the Owls came out on top in two of those matches.

Piedmont jumped ahead to an early lead after a clinical second set performance from Ella Kate Canaday in a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Bryn Mawr immediately answered with a straight set win of its own at No. 6.

No. 1 singles was the next match to finish, as Bryn Mawr's Sophie Fenster rprevailed in a third-set match tiebreak.

However, the Lions answered back immediately, as Hattie Sloyan delivered a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 to even the match at 2-2.

The final two singles matches each were marathon battles that went to third-set breakers. The Owls were able to take the match at No. 4, leaving it up to Caroline Morrison at No. 2 to save the Lions and keep their hopes alive for the win. The sophomore delivered in the clutch, winning a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (8) thriller to even things up once again.

With doubles set to decide the overall outcome, the Lions pushed ahead with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles from Canaday and Sarah Sanabia. Unfortunately, the Owls were undeterred, picking up a 6-1 win at No. 1, followed by a match-clinching 6-4 win at No. 2.

Up next, the Lions will open CCS play with a road match against Huntingdon on Friday, March 20.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Morrison's hard-fought win at No. 2 moved her to 5-1 in dual singles matches this season and also marked her second straight win in a third-set match tiebreak on the trip.
