ATLANTA – The Piedmont men's and women's track and field team headed down to Atlanta for the Emory Spring Break Classic over the weekend.
The Lions competed in yet another two-day meet with several new personal bests against a heavy competition field.
Friday, the Lions saw many new personal bests set from both the field and track side. In the women's hammer throw, three out of four took home a new PR including
Shealee Gallegos (37.18m),
Kayla Ward (37.09m), and
Anna Belle King (30.75m). In the men's hammer throw,
Matthew Blocksom threw a new personal best of 43.67m. This new mark improves his number No. 3 all time spot in the record books. In javelin throw, both
Ja'Nia Gray and
Brayden Saxon improved their mark. Gray throwing 22.25m and Saxon 27.62m.
On the track side, three runners improved their times on day one.
Naomi Oti-Wapala ran the 200m and secured a new PR of 27.61. While in the men's 200m,
Daeon Neal posted a new PR of 24.05. In the 1500m,
Bella Caccamo set a new personal best by 9 seconds, putting her second all time in the record books behind Jaycie Ponce.
Saturday, the Lions saw even more PR performances on both sides. In the men's long jump,
Nehemiah Franklin posted a new mark of 5.63m. In the men's shot put,
Jacob Baker set a new personal best with a mark of 11.57m.
To the track, eight runners took home new personal bests. In the qualifying round of the men's 100m, Martin (11.47),
Miles Havis (11.50) and Franklin (12.24) had pr performances.
Silas Goolsby made his debut in the 100m running a time of 10.73 and placing fifth in the qualifying round.
For the men's 1500m,
Brody Geckler crushed his last attempt at this race by nine seconds, running a time of 4:37.20. In the women's 400m,
Allison Cantrell and Caccamo both took home new personal bests with Caccamo running 1:02.57 and Cantrell 1:03.53. For the men's 400m,
Tyler Brown keeps improving his time by the milliseconds. Brown finished with a time of 51.67. Lastly,
Shaqir Riggins took on the 800m again this weekend setting a new personal best by five seconds. Riggins crossed the line at 2:15.59.
Next up, the Lions are scheduled to come back to Emory University for the Thrills in the Hills meet on March 27-28
th.
