Score: No. 3 Case Western Reserve 6, Piedmont 1
Record: Piedmont, 5-6
ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont men's tennis took the doubles point off No. 3 Case Western Reserve in a 6-1 loss on Thursday in Orlando.
On a day when the Lions were scheduled to also play Anderson Univ. (Ind.) in the afternoon, that match was abandoned due to inclement weather.
In a match where singles was contested first, the third-ranked Spartans showed why they're a top-ranked team, quickly taking the necessary four matches to earn the clinch.
CWRU won all six singles lines in straight sets. However,
Leyton Dunn made his opponent battle, playing two hard-fought sets at No. 1 in a 6-4, 6-3 loss.
Even though the outcome was decided, the Lions saved their best tennis for last, taking the doubles point against the Spartans with a pair of big wins.
While CWRU rolled to a 6-0 wn at No. 3 doubles, Piedmont's No. 2 and No. 1 doubles team were up to the task. First, it was the No. 2 team of
Rohan Kavali and
Horacio Rodriguez who prevailed, 6-3. That left the outcome of the doubles point up to No. 1 doubles, where Dunn and
Caleb McElveen outlasted their opponents with a hard-fought 7-5 victory to put a point on the board and end the match on a high note.
Up next, the Lions will take on Truett McConnell on the road next Wednesday, March 18 at 2 p.m.
