ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont men's tennis suffered its first loss on its Orlando Spring Break Trip, 6-1, at the hands of Wabash on Tuesday morning.
In a match that was hard-fought throughout, the Little Giants emerged victorious in a number of matches to clinch the win.
Doubles action saw the Lions quickly take the early advantage as
Rohan Kavali and
Mark Backeberg continued their dominant play, cruising to a 6-0 win. However, the Little Giants responded with their backs against the wall, earning a win at No. 1 before eking out a 7-5 victory at No. 2 to lead 1-0 going to singles.
The Lions battled in singles, but Wabash was able to win 5-of-6 matches and run away with the win.
Backeberg took his doubles dominance into singles play, winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 to put Piedmont's lone point on the board.
Horacio Rodriguez rallied from down a set to win the second and force a third set match tiebreak, but fell, 10-8, in the lengthy breaker.
Up next, the Lions will play two matches on Wednesday in Orlando, taking on Carthage in the morning before battling Roger Williams in the afternoon.
TURNING POINT:
- Wabash won the doubles point by the slimmest of margins, with a 7-5 victory at No. 2, giving it momentum going into singles.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Backeberg teamed with Kavali for a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles before dispatching his opponent in singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
