Sloyan Earns the Clinch as Women's Tennis Cruises at Huntingdon 7-0

Records: Piedmont, 1-0; Huntingdon, 0-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Piedmont women's tennis cruised to a 7-0 road sweep over familiar foe Huntingdon in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.

Looking to four-peat as CCS Regular Season champions, the Lions got a look at one of the teams that will attempt to stand in their way this upcoming season and had no trouble dispatching the Hawks quickly.

Newcomers were involved in all three of Piedmont's doubles wins. First, it was Ella Kate Canaday teaming with senior Jordan Ballard for a 6-0 win at No. 3. Then, it was a race to clinch the doubles point, won by the No. 1 team of freshman Kaleigh Stallworth and sophomore Sarah Sanabia, who won 6-2 to give Piedmont a 1-0 lead in the match. Finally, for good measure, the No. 2 team of newcomer Hattie Sloyan and sophomore Caroline Morrison prevailed 6-2.

Singles action saw the Lions continue to dominate, winning all six lines, with five of them coming in straight sets.

Canaday continued her stellar dual match debut for the Lions, with a clinical 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3. Then, it was fellow freshman Stallworth's turn to go 2-0 on the day, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Then, it was a race to the clinch, won by Sloyan, 7-5, 6-3 in her Piedmont debut after transferring in following the fall semester.

Looking to complete the sweep, Piedmont was able to deliver. Sanabia rallied after dropping the first set to win the second set 6-3, and then take the 10-point match tiebreak as well.

Finally, Morrison (6-0, 6-1) and Ballard (6-2, 6-2) combined to lose just five total games at No. 5 and No. 6 to put an exclamation point on the day.

Up next, the Lions will have over a week off from competition before returning with split squad action on Thursday, Feb. 19. One group will take on Oglethorpe in the home opener at 3 p.m. while another group will battle LaGrange in non-conference play on the road at 4 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES::
