Women's Tennis Delivers Pair of Shutouts in Split Squad Action Thursday

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: Piedmont 7, Oglethorpe 0
Match 2 Score: Piedmont 7, LaGrange 0
Record: Piedmont, 3-0

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's tennis returned to the courts in split squad action Thursday and delivered a pair of dominant wins, sweeping Oglethorpe at home and LaGrange on the road in a non-conference contest.

Match 1: Piedmont 7, Oglethorpe 0

Piedmont women's tennis left no doubt in its 2026 spring home opener Thursday afternoon against Oglethorpe.

The Lions were dominant in doubles action and carried the momentum into singles to secure the 7-0 sweep.

Doubles competition saw Piedmont drop just one total game across the three lines. No. 3 doubles finished first, with Senior Jordan Ballard and freshmen Annalia Small teaming up for a 6-0 win.

Then, it was newcomers Kaleigh Stallworth and Halee Harper who clinched the doubles point, also not dropping a game at No. 2. For good measure, the No. 1 team of Ella Kate Canaday and Hattie Sloyan cruised to a 6-1 victory.

The dominance continued into singles play, as the Lions' No. 1 through No. 3 lines took care of the Stormy Petrels in straight sets. Canaday did not drop a game at No. 2 while Stallworth rolled (6-1, 6-1) at the top spot in the lineup. That left it up to the newcomer Sloyan, who delivered her second straight clinch (6-1, 6-0) in two matches as a Lion.

With the match in hand, the rest of the Lions kept the level of play high. Harper won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 while Ballard (6-0, 6-1) and Small (6-1, 6-1) concluded the match with clinical wins at No. 5 and No. 6.

Match 2: Piedmont 7, LaGrange 0

The rest of the Lions traveled south to LaGrange, Georgia to battle the Panthers in a non-conference match.

Doubles action mirrored the match against Oglethorpe, with No. 2 and No. 3 not dropping a single game on the way to a 1-0 lead. Mackenzie Long and Drea Robinson clinched first at No. 3 before Olivia Carpenter and Sarah Sanabia put the Lions ahead 1-0 with their win at No. 2. The No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Row and Caroline Morrison completed the sweep moments later, winning 6-1.

Singles competition was more of the same, as Piedmont did not drop a single set, winning all six in straights or by retirement. After winning a grueling first set that ended in a tiebreak, Carpenter made it 2-0 Lions after her opponent was forced to retire early in the second set. Then, it was the bottom of the lineup's turn to seal the win for Piedmont. Mackenzie Long prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 while the freshman Addyson Willis provided the clinch, with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6.

Playing out the remaining matches, Piedmont kept asserting itself, as Morrison (6-2, 6-1), Sanabia (6-2, 6-1) and Robinson (6-0, 6-1) cruised to wins to close out the festivities.

Up next, Piedmont is scheduled to travel to North Carolina and take on Pfeiffer this Sunday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. before taking on Salem at 2 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
