Women's Tennis Delivers Pair of Road Sweeps to Highlight Three-Match Friday

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: N.C. Wesleyan 6, Piedmont 1
Match 2 Score: Piedmont 7, Agnes Scott 0
Match 3 Score: Piedmont 7, Meredith 0

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Piedmont women's tennis played three true road matches on Friday, winning two in decisive fashion.

One group of Lions headed to North Carolina to battle N.C. Wesleyan in the morning and Meredith in the afternoon while another group headed south to Decatur to take on Agnes Scott in non-conference action.

Although the Lions fell in the morning to the Battling Bishops, the other two matches were dominant displays and 7-0 victories to move the team's overall record to 6-1 this season.

Match 1: N.C. Wesleyan 6, Piedmont 1

Taking on their former USA South rivals for the first time since 2021, the Battling Bishops took control of the match early with a doubles sweep before winning five of the six singles lines in straight sets.

Hattie Sloyan was a bright spot for the Lions, as the newcomer cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

Match 2: Piedmont 7, Agnes Scott 0

Another group remained in Georgia and delivered a clinical performance in a 7-0 win at Agnes Scott in Decatur.

Jordan Ballard and Olivia Carpenter set the tone with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and the Lions cruised from there. Annalia Small and Drea Robinson clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 while Mackenzie Long and Karen Sanchez Castillo also added a win at No. 3 doubles (6-3).

Singles play brought more Piedmont dominance as the Lions won all six matches in straight sets. Long won her match first, not dropping a single game in a win at No. 5. Then, it was freshman Addyson Willis's turn, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. The race to the clinch was won by Robinson at No. 3, as she triumphed 6-1, 6-0.

With the match in hand, Carpenter won by the exact same score line as Robinson (6-1, 6-0), while Small (6-2, 6-3) and Ballard (6-3, 6-4) were pushed but still prevailed in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 1, respectively.

Match 3: Piedmont 7, Meredith 0

The group that took on N.C. Wesleyan in the morning then headed indoors to battle Meredith on a rainy afternoon and won in convincing fashion. Piedmont lost just two total games across three doubles lines and did not drop a game in three of the six singles lines, dropping just one game in the other three.

Caroline Morrison and Sarah Row delivered a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles before the No. 3 team of Alex Snodgrass and Sloyan won 6-1 to clinch a 1-0 lead going to singles. Ella Kate Canaday and Sarah Sanabia also won, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.

Singles action saw three Lions win 6-0, 6-0, with Harper winning first at No. 4, followed by Sanabia at No. 2 and then Sloyan with another clinch at No. 3.

Kaleigh Stallworth (6-0, 6-1), Row (6-0, 6-1) and Snodgrass (6-0, 6-1) all won by identical score lines to complete the match, at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Up next, the Lions do not compete in any matches until their Orlando Spring Break trip, beginning Sunday, March 8. The team will play six matches in Orlando.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Sloyan has now earned the clinch in three of the team's six wins this season. She delivered a 2-0 singles record on the day.
